Every year, 3.1 million children die from malnutrition-related causes. The risk of hunger and malnutrition is deepening as food prices remain high, the economic downturn pushes millions more into poverty and the effects of climate change on livelihoods worsens. But the solutions have become clearer. The 2008 food price spike put world food security firmly on the international agenda. The political moment has come – now it’s time for governments to take a fresh look at their national plans. With this in mind, this report proposes to governments an eight-step package to improve the diets of pregnant women and children under the age of two, and thereby to help prevent hunger and malnutrition.
