It has been more than six months since the 8.8-magnitude earthquake rocked southern Chile on 27 February 2010 – the second strongest in the country’s history – leaving hundreds dead and millions more affected. This report provides an overview of Save the Children’s emergency response, primarily targeting children, who are the ones most affected after disasters of this type, suffering from anxiety regarding their future, their welfare and that of their families. Save the Children, in coordination with local authorities and organizations, focused relief efforts on the establishment of child-friendly safe spaces providing children with temporary schooling, a safe place to recover from the disaster and psychosocial support. Save the Children has also been involved in the process to access water, sanitation and hygiene and help deal with the shelter situation in the hardest hit areas.
