Approximately 400 children are expected to be infected by soil-transmitted helminths (STH), intestinal parasites that make children unwell and affect their physical and mental development, and subsequently, impede on their ability to successfully participate in school. These infections can be easily treated with deworming pills, these treat the immediate infection and when distributed at large, can also prevent spreading and re-infection of STH.
The close relationship between teachers, students, and the community makes schools the ideal place to distribute and treat STH. This document provides guidelines for those planning and implementing a school-based deworming program, as part of a comprehensive School Health and Nutrition program.
