The 2012 Global Peace Index (GPI) is the sixth edition of the world’s leading measure of global peacefulness. Produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace, the GPI ranks 158 nations using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators which gauge ongoing domestic and international conflict, safety and security in society and militarization. According to the 2012 GPI, the world has become slightly more peaceful in the past year – all regions, except the Middle East and North Africa, saw an improvement in terms of overall peacefulness. The report is divided into three main sections: the first is the methodology, results and findings from the 2012 index, the second is an analysis of trends in peacefulness since the inception of the GPI in 2007, and the final section is IEP’s first attempt at defining a Positive Peace Index.
