This article, through a quantitative review of a large amount of literature on gender education differentials, explores the question of whether or not gender inequality has improved in China over the past 30 years.

Although the article’s results suggest that gender inequality still exists, varying in severity by area (rural versus urban) and grade level, it has been narrowing over time. The article also finds that girls who live in a rural setting face more inequality than those who live in urban areas.
