Save the Children Sweden

A brochure on the dangers of child abuse that lists some useful information on what you need to know about reporting child abuse cases. Each year thousands of children are victims of child abuse in Sweden and each year children die as a consequence of physical ill-treatment. Many other children will suffer from different types of physical health problems later in life and a high rate of chronic conditions. But even children who are not physically injured can suffer profound and long-lasting negative psychological and emotional sequels. In 2004, around 8000 cases of child abuse of children under age 15 were reported to the Swedish police. In 1979 Sweden became the first country in the world to prohibit all physical punishment of children. Parental Code, Chapter 6, Custody and Access, Introductory Provisions, Section 1, of the law establishes that: ”Children are entitled to care, security and a good upbringing. Children are to be treated with respect for their person and individuality and may not be subjected to corporal punishment or any other humiliating treatment”. The law has been in effect since July 1, 1979.
