A checklist for a better reception of children and young people in families seeking asylum in Sweden, i.e. accompanied by one or both parents and eventual siblings. The checklist, published by Save the Children Sweden, has been developed applying a child rights perspective based on the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and summarises the key issues to be taken into account by Swedish municipal authorities assigned to receive young asylum seekers. It addresses aspects associated with schools, healthcare, housing, leisure activities, etc., and also raises the issue of the responsibilities and mandates of the various authorities involved in working with refugee and asylum-seeking children. Individual grounds for asylum are not looked at, although some aspects may be related to the processing of the application. According to the Swedish Migration Board, Sweden is one of the European countries accepting most asylum-seekers – in 2011 a total of 29,648 people sought asylum: 7,042 were children accompanied by a relative and the number of unaccompanied minors seeking asylum in Sweden was 2,657 in all.
Save the Children published in 2010 a well received checklist advocating for the rights of asylum-seeking minors not under parental authority.
