The 2012 Somalia Consolidated Appeal

The 2012 Somalia Consolidated Appeal Process (CAP) is asking global donors for $1.5 billion to fund 350 projects operated by 148 humanitarian organizations, to assist Somalis affected by drought and war. Somalia is the country experiencing the single most dramatic escalation of requirements for 2012, requiring $ 500 million more for 2012 than for 2011. In total, four million people were in crisis nationwide – 250,000 peoples are still facing famine, 450,000 children are acutely malnourished, and almost 300,000 Somalis fled hunger and warfare in 2011. In order to address the immediate humanitarian needs, the Somalia Humanitarian Country Team endorsed four strategic priorities:
•To provide life-saving assistance to people living in famine and humanitarian emergency in order to reduce mortality and prevent further displacement;
•To protect and restore livelihood assets through early recovery, resilience-building, emergency preparedness and disaster risk reduction, and improving social and productive networks;
•To provide a minimum package of basic services;
•To strengthen the protective environment of the vulnerable population. These priorities are in line with the 2011 priorities and emphasize the need for an integrated livelihoods approach to response planning.
