Exposure to faecal contamination and poor water, sanitation and hygiene can increase the risk of illness and impair nutrient absorption, affecting infants’ growth and recovery.
These cards focus on four key WASH risks affecting infant health and nutrition:
• Handwashing with soap at key times
• Safe disposal of infant faeces
• Safe water storage and handling
• A clean and safe environment for the infant
These risks have been prioritised because they can be addressed at household level through simple, practical actions following counselling.
These cards are designed to be used within routine MAMI consultations. A standalone WASH programme is not required. WASH risks can be identified and addressed through counselling during existing contact with caregivers. Focus on one priority message at a time.
