Save the Children Sweden

All children have the right to a meaningful leisure time – as play, rest and leisure are crucial for a good upbringing and good physical and mental health. But not all children in Sweden have the same opportunities. Today, far too many children are excluded – due to barriers such as fees, prejudices, unfamiliarity, distance, and limiting norms. To give children in vulnerable areas the opportunity to participate in club sports, Save the Children DOIT in Malmö, Kroksbäck was started in 2017. DOIT removes obstacles such as fees, distance, and fear of not fitting in. The method used is based on close collaborations with local actors, which allows clubs to establish themselves in areas where there are no organized leisure activities.

The evaluation shows that children’s opinions about their participation in DOIT were generally very positive. Children reported that DOIT contributed to a more fun leisure time and the activities have had a positive impact on their lives. Although the children thought that DOIT’s activities were fun, most of them would want more activities to do. The evaluation shows that DOIT is a clear example of when adults lower barriers and give children opportunities for better health and well-being. We can also see this in the effects that DOIT has had on the local area and how clubs have been strengthened through the children’s engagement and willingness.
