Since 2013, Sudan has hosted 784,860 South Sudanese refugees, including 338,000 school-aged children. Sudan’s education policy allows these children to enroll in government schools after an assessment. Currently, 70% of South Sudanese refugee children attend schools for refugees, which teach Sudan’s national curriculum. The PROSPECTS programme, implemented in East Darfur and West Kordofan, aims to strengthen education access for refugees. Key achievements include training 215 South Sudanese teachers, integrating 1,611 refugee students into the national system, and providing cross-sectoral support such as WASH services and mental health support. The programme has improved social cohesion and eased the transition of refugee students into Sudan’s education system.
