It was 1967 and for the first time, the world was upset by the images of the children of Biafra, reduced to starvation during a dramatic civil war for the independence of the south-eastern provinces of Nigeria. Fifty years later, malnutrition remains a silent killer that continues to kill millions of children. Today, half of the 6 million children who die before the age of five die from preventable and treatable causes. Despite the many advances in combating malnutrition since 1967, it is unacceptable that there are still children who die due to lack of food, water and care.
This report offers some reflections on this subject of malnutrition in children living in vulnerable contexts.
