Tuwekeze Pamoja (2017-2022) is a project implemented by Save the Children and ADP Mbozi. It aims to improve children’s development and learning outcomes by providing a continuum of support for girls and boys from conception to six years old. It enables caregivers to provide a more supportive environment at home, supports more effective teaching in pre-primary and works with communities and local government to provide an enabling environment for these changes.
The project is working in 8 Wards in Mbozi District, Songwe, Tanzania – reaching nearly 14,000 children, 12,000 caregivers and working with 44 pre-primary classes (teachers and school leaders) and with local and national authorities.
The project midline study assesses the impact of the project’s interventions to help caregivers adopt behaviours and practices that support their children’s age appropriate development and learning – through group parenting sessions on responsive caregiving, early learning, nutrition, and child protection, complemented by home visits for vulnerable families. Half of the intervention groups received an additional “Core Plus” intervention focused on violence reduction, including further parenting sessions, an additional home visit, community theatre and activities with local leaders.
The midline study is a mixed-method quasi-experimental design conducted by Save the Children in partnership with the University of St Andrews. Data was collected from 1,722 caregivers and their children and assessed the project’s impact on the development outcomes of a cohort of children aged 2-3 years old using the Caregiver Reported Early Development Instrument (CREDI). Caregivers’ knowledge, practices and attitudes were measured using the Caregiver Survey. Further qualitative data was collected from caregivers, children, government officials, and project staff.
