The joy of the first day of school is not experienced with equal intensity from all pupils in Italy. The excitement of the return to class is often accompanied by problems in buying all the materials required for learning, first and foremost the textbooks.

What role does the textbook play in today’s classroom and how does the state respond to the need for equal education opportunities? How can the right to education to all children without discrimination be guaranteed?

This monitoring report analyzes the existing problems and assesses current programmes employed by the state to mitigate them.
