Save the Children UK
This year we have seen a child refugee crisis spiral out of control. Children have been dying on our doorstep. The UN says more than 350,000 refugees and migrants have used the dangerous sea route across the Mediterranean so far this year, with almost 235,000 of them landing in Greece and a further 115,000 in Italy. Thousands of these are children.
Since the beginning of the year, at least 7,600 children have arrived alone in Italy and 4,000 unaccompanied children arriving from Greece have been registered in Serbia, according to UNHCR. So whilst we welcome the Prime Minister’s commitment to resettle 20,000 Syrians, Save the Children believes the UK must share the burden with our fellow EU members and offer to relocate the most vulnerable children who are already in Europe – those who have arrived without family members, completely alone.
