Syria Evaluation Report Global Hunger Crisis: Cash for Nutrition

This study was conducted as part of Save the Children’s hunger crisis response in Syria and aims to contribute to evidence generation and learning on the use of the Resourcing Families for Better Nutrition (RF4BN) Common Approach.

RF4BN seeks to reduce maternal and child malnutrition by addressing key drivers through a combination of Cash and Voucher Assistance (CVA), nutrition-related social and behaviour change communication, and strengthened linkages between individuals, communities, and health and nutrition services.

This longitudinal panel study of 75 mother–child pairs aimed to evaluate the impact of this package of interventions on household food security, maternal and child dietary diversity, maternal nutrition knowledge and treatment recovery.

The findings show that the RF4BN approach resulted in substantial and statistically significant improvements in household food security and maternal and child dietary diversity in northwest Syria over the course of the intervention. However, the study could not determine the specific impact of cash on sustained treatment recovery due to the lack of a control group to distinguish between the effects of wasting treatment and the contribution of cash.
