Supplementary report by Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) to India’s periodic country report on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). India submitted its Initial Reports on the implementation of the CRC in 1997. The Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC Committee) considered it January 2000 and made specific recommendations to the government of India for implementation of the Convention. The first periodic report submitted in 2001 ignores many criticial Recommendations of the CRC Committee. This alternate report seeks to assist the CRC Committee by providing information about the actual status of the children in India. The case studies cited in the report are not exhaustive but may be indicative of the patterns of violations of children’s rights in India. With this report, ACHR hopes to help the Committee on the Rights of the Child to identify the critical issues to seek further updated information from the government of India during the pre-sessional hearing for effective examination of the periodic report in January 2004.
