This publication presents a statistical overview of different factors relating to violence against girls, especially adolescent girls. Despite recent improvements, many adolescent girls suffer violence of various kinds, which have adverse impacts on their physical and psychological wellbeing. Data is given across a range of factors, most notably age and country. Puberty is seen to intensify a girl’s vulnerability to violence as it changes the perspective of her societal role (girl to woman).
Statistical information is also given for the consequences of violence against adolescent girls. Due to social pressures and isolation, child brides, for example, are more likely to have many children at a young age and to be denied proper medical care while pregnant. And if the phenomenon of child marriage goes unchecked, while unlikely to increase, it will likely remain a constant if further efforts are not made to eradicate it.
Ending violence against adolescent girls requires action at all levels, from governments to communities.
