State of Civil Society Report 2017: Civil society and the private sector

Annually, CIVICUS presents the CIVICUS State of Civil Society Report, which examines the prior year’s events that involve and affect civil society globally. The 2017 report marks the resurgence of right-wing populist groups and politics; freedom of speech; protest movements; and civil society’s international-level actions.

The second section of this report focuses on a special thematic area and this year it is the private sector. Transnational business and the spread of their influence into areas beyond the economic sphere, including political, social and cultural spheres, challenge the way civil society engages and works with the private sector. This section concludes with suggestions for both parties for different ways of interacting with each other that guarantee greater social responsibility.
