South Sudan Teachers’ Code of Conduct for Emergency Situations

The Code of Conduct is designed to support teachers in their work to continue providing protective education to the children of South Sudan during emergencies.

The Teachers’ Code of Conduct for Emergency Situations outlines the responsibilities of teachers in emergency situations and the relationship between teachers, learners, and the community. It also describes how teachers can support each other during emergency situations so that they can cope and contribute to the post-emergency recovery. Teachers are the main audience for the document but in the context of an emergency, ‘teacher’ refers to any adult who is supervising learning in a classroom or temporary learning space which might include formally trained government teachers or untrained trusted volunteers from the community. The Code was designed to complement the Southern Sudan Teachers’ Professional Code of Conduct (2008) with the understanding that in times of crisis, teachers may not have been trained on the broader document and where there are particular protection and safety concerns that teachers must be aware of. The Code can also be used in conjunction with the broader Teacher Code of Conduct training and related materials developed by Save the Children Denmark, which includes modules and materials on positive discipline, teacher self-care and social emotional learning.
