Situations of Children and Youth with Diverse SOGIESC In Thailand: 4th Cycle Universal Periodic Review

This document presents findings on the situation of children and youth with diverse Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and Sex Characteristics (SOGIESC) in Thailand, developed by the Coalition of CSOs for Children’s SOGIESC Rights Thailand. Drawing on a youth-led UPR survey with 171 respondents, alongside national research, it highlights persistent barriers to the full realization of children’s rights across education, family life, mental health, gender recognition, healthcare, and protection.

Despite recent progress, including marriage equality, the prohibition of corporal and psychological punishment of children, and public funding for gender-affirming hormone therapy, children and youth with diverse SOGIESC continue to experience discrimination, limited family acceptance, mental health challenges, restrictions on gender expression, and barriers to appropriate healthcare. The document also highlights heightened risks of online grooming, sexual exploitation, and cyberbullying among LGBTIQ+ children.

The recommendations call for legal and policy reform, mandatory teacher training, positive parenting programmes, affirming mental health services, inclusive gender recognition legislation, improved access to gender-affirming care, and stronger legal protections against exploitation, harassment, bullying, and cyberbullying
