The purpose of this report “Situación de los derechos de niños, niñas y adolescentes en América Latina y el Caribe (Child rights situation in Latin America and the Caribbean), commissioned by Save the Children Sweden, is to identify and understand the main problems facing children and adolescents in the region, and to contribute to the prioritization of intervention areas. The report is based on a variety of secondary information sources, i.e. documents for public release and institutional bibliographies, as well as new and updated electronic resources concerning these themes.
This report is presented in four chapters (plus annexes). The first chapter addresses the family environment and the demographic, socio-economic, political & institutional aspects in a regional context. The second chapter analyses the enjoyment of the rights enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). The third chapter explicitly takes up each one of these rights, and the last chapter presents some conclusions, particularly regarding the role of government and civil society. The annexes include information on State party ratifications of international protocols on the protection of child rights.
