Save the Children South Sudan
Children’s access to education in South Sudan has been impaired by conflicts, displacements, deteriorating economy, negative cultural norms and beliefs, and extreme poverty, which has contributed so much to poor quality education services provision in the country. In order to address these, Save the Children South Sudan with support from Swedish International Development Agency (sida) came up with a project entitled “Support for Education and Successful Transitions among vulnerable children in South Sudan”.
On April 25th, 2023, Save the Children and the partners; government, university of juba, Organization for Peace, Relief and Development (OPRD), SPDEP and Light for the world conducted a workshop to brainstorm on the lessons learned in implementing the sida education project implemented in Magwi, Torit, Bor, Kapoeta counties of South Sudan. A hybrid (both physical and online) method of workshop was adopted.
Key gaps from the workshop: Few female teachers in schools. Disability inclusion, making relevant adaptations both in the community and school environment in collaboration with organizations that work for people with disabilities. Teacher payments, a permanent/sustainable solution for payment of teachers to ensure continuous teachings and learnings. Eradication of deep rooted cultural, social and economic barriers to girl’s education. Piloting of ALP material (APEPT) needs to be done. Some children are still studying outside classrooms due to existing school infrastructure gaps inform of additional classrooms and sitting desks
