Since 1990, the global community accomplished a 60% drop in mortality of children under the age of five. This progress is remarkable and a cause for celebration. However, 5.2 million small children still die each year to preventable causes, with phenomena accounting for 15% of deaths
Progress in reducing pneumonia-related mortality has been slow compared to other causes of death in children, primarily due to many places not having access to lifesaving interventions. On World Pneumonia Day, we call for concrete action from governments and other stakeholders on the commitments made in the inaugural “Fighting for Breath” Global Forum on Childhood Pneumonia in January 2020.
