Sexual and Gender-based Violence (SGBV) is a pervasive human rights violation that occurs in all contexts, including emergencies. It is often under-reported due to harmful gender norms, normalization of violence, fear of stigma, and lack of accessible services. Children may take years to recognize their experiences as abuse. Effective SGBV prevention, mitigation, and response are crucial and must be integrated into all phases of emergency preparedness and response. While prevention and mitigation are the responsibility of all humanitarian staff, specialized personnel handle response efforts. Immediate action is essential, assuming SGBV is occurring and treating it as a serious, life-threatening issue.
