Since October 2017, violent attacks have been perpetrated by armed groups in Cabo Delgado province and in 2020, with the intensification of attacks in several districts of the province, particularly Mocímboa da Praia, Macomia, Muidumbe and Quissanga. Thousands of families were displaced from where the attacks took place, directly affecting the well-being of children, particularly those who found themselves unaccompanied and separated from their families. According to information obtained through the SDPI, the district currently has a registered population of 114, 345 people; about 60.96% of these are internally displaced, corresponding to 69,709 people, and 24.51% are returnees, totaling 28,028 individuals. It is against this background that Save the Children’s RNA team, with ECHO funding, conducted a rapid needs assessment to identify the most critical short-, medium- and long-term needs of IDPs, host communities and returnees and recommend support areas for all potential responders, focused primarily on education and child protection.
