2023 is a critical year for the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) movement with the second High-Level Meeting on UHC taking place in September at the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York. This meeting will culminate with the adoption of a second political declaration on UHC negotiated by governments. It represents an opportunity to hold governments accountable to their previous commitments and call for accelerated actions to achieve the right to health for all.

Delivering on the Sustainable Development Goal 3 on good health and well-being — and more specifically target 3.8 on UHC — is foundational for improving access to health and nutrition services and ending preventable deaths of newborn babies, children and mothers, particularly those impacted by inequality and discrimination. This position paper identifies Save the Children priorities to strengthen health systems that can deliver comprehensive, equitable and quality, affordable essential services for all, at all times.
