Save the Children Sweden
Save the Children Sweden was the first international NGO to register in Yemen and has had a consistent presence in the country since then. It was initially involved mainly in health work such as vaccination campaigns and building hospitals. In 1963, Tage Gustafsson (Technical Director for the inbound flights of Yemen) wrote a proposal seeking SC’s assistance in a vaccination campaign against TB for children in Northern Yemen. On 2 September 1963, 2 Swedish nurses arrived in Taiz to implement the campaign. SC’s first historical grant was 100,000 SEK. In April 1964, SCS donated another 250,000 SEK to continue the activity in Yemen for one more year. The activity was going to be extended with the following; supporting the establishment of a child hospital in Taiz with 25 beds, employing one more nurse, creating a Yemen Committee, and training the Yemeni staff. The child hospital was opened on the first day of December, 1964.
Today, Save the Children is operates a wide range of programmes in Yemen focused on Child Rights, Child Protection, Education, Health, Nutrition and Food Security. We invite you to read the full report here and learn more about Save the Children Sweden’s achievements during its 50-year history in Yemen.
