Response to Increased Environmental Degradation and Promotion of Alternative Energy Sources in Refugee Hosting Districts (RED) is a 4-year project (4 January 2021 – 31 December 2024) funded by the European Union (EU) Delegation to Uganda under the EU Emergency Trust Fund for stability and addressing root causes of irregular migration and displaced persons in Africa (EUTF), grant reference: EUTF-HOA-UG-83-01. Its overall objective is to increase environmental protection, forest restoration, and improve sustainable energy and alternative livelihoods by displaced populations and their host communities in the districts of Adjumani, Madi Okollo and Terego, Kiryandongo and Yumbe.

The population meeting their basic needs while sustaining natural resources stood at 34.7% compared to the baseline value of 34.1 %; Beneficiaries in study districts have steadily transitioned from traditional and unsustainable energy sources to sustainable alternative sources of energy with 73.8% of households reporting low dependence on unsustainable and unregulated sources of energy compared to only 3.3% at baseline.
