Globally, 11% of babies are born to adolescent mothers (10-19 years). Adolescent mothers are at an increased risk of pregnancy complications, poor birth outcomes, anemia and other forms of malnutrition. Additionally, their children are more likely to be born premature, low birthweight (LBW), small for gestational age, and they are at a higher risk of infant mortality.
This programmatic brief provides recommendations for programme managers and technical staff on how to strengthen care services for adolescent mothers of nutritionally at-risk infants less than 6 months, focusing on the MAMI Care Pathway or other existing health and nutrition care services for mothers and at-risk infants.
This programmatic brief complements the Training Module for health workers: https://resourcecentre.savethechildren.net/document/module-x-providing-adolescent-sensitive-services-to-mothers-of-nutritionally-at-risk-infants
