In 2020, Pippi Longstocking celebrated her 75th birthday: the first Pippi book was published in 1945. As a result of World War II, it was a time when millions of people were on the move – many of them children. Against this backdrop, Astrid Lindgren created an extraordinary girl who overcame extraordinary circumstances.

Today, almost eight decades later, more people are being forcibly displaced than ever. Half of them are children, and girls are particularly vulnerable.

The Astrid Lindgren Company and Save the Children Sweden started the Pippi of Today initiative to support girls on the move.

We believe every girl on the move has her own strength, and deserves to take charge of her own life – her own story. Inspired by the strongest girl in the world, we can support them to do it.

In the past three years we have raised €2 million and worked with over 70 partners on projects in 19 countries around the world. We have reached 55,000 girls on the move directly. In total the initiative has reached more than 250,000 children and caregivers.

All funds raised through the campaign have been directed towards Save the Children programmes with specific focus on the issues faced by girls on the move and their experiences of falling between the cracks in policy, programmes and advocacy.

Through match funding, smaller funds have been used to make an even greater impact. The programmes are carried out in countries of origin, in countries where girls are in transit, and countries of destination where girls plan to settle.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic adding significant complexities to programming, we made a positive impact on girls on the move in all 19 countries.

In this report you can read about how projects in 19 countries around the world have made a positive change in girls’ lives.
