Operation and Maintenance Financing for School WASH Facilities in Kenya

This is a case study on the financing for the operation and maintenance (O&M) of school WASH facilities in Kenya, based on a review of documents, key informant interviews and visits to 10 schools in Nairobi.

Kenya has established policies and institutions to support operations and management of school WASH facilities. Nonetheless, gaps in the current resource system has resulted in the government being unable to meet operations and management needs for WASH in schools. Problems with WASH at schools included the inability to hire a janitor to maintain facilities and affording to maintain a water supply.
