This is a case study on the financing for the operation and maintenance (O&M) of school WASH facilities in Indonesia, based on a review of documents, key informant interviews and visits to 10 schools in the Kupang and Malaka districts of Nusa Tenggara Timur province.

Indonesia has some good practices to ensure an enabling resource environment for the construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of WASH facilities in schools. Despite this, school visits found there were issues with the functionality and cleanliness of WASH facilities in schools. Most schools reported their WASH operation and management systems as not working well, citing funding limitation as a primary cause.
