Undernutrition is the underlying cause of more than a third of children’s deaths – 2.3 million in 2011. Around 170 million children under five are stunted – and denied the chance to fulfil their potential. Recent international attention on this hidden crisis is welcome – and long overdue. To assess governments’ ambition and commitment to tackle undernutrition, Save the Children and World Vision have produced The Nutrition Barometer. This first edition of the Barometer monitors governments’ commitment to nutrition in the 36 countries that are home to 90% of undernourished children. It compares these commitments with governments’ actual progress in tackling undernutrition and child mortality.
