In June 2012, the Government of Bangladesh showed its commitment to providing social protection for its people by initiating the National Social Safety Strategy (NSSS). The NSSS proposes a life cycle approach to social protection, but does not yet clearly provide adequate strategic guidance regarding how to target the particular vulnerabilities and exclusion of adolescents and young people in Bangladesh.
This brief sets out some key potential gains that well-designed social protection can offer in the current context, and presents four different but complementary policy and programmatic perspectives for targeting adolescent girls, their families and communities. The brief is intended to inspire and guide discussion around the issue, rather than to serve as a comprehensive analysis.
