There is growing evidence on the unique impacts of heatwaves on children’s health and wellbeing. In a year that set multiple records for the highest temperatures, Save the Children examined the number of children who faced heatwaves between July 2023 and June 2024. By defining a heatwave as at least three consecutive days with temperatures above the hottest 1% recorded in the past 30 years for a given location, the analysis combined publicly available satellite data with global child population estimates to determine how many children experienced a heatwave during this period.
