Save the Children Philippines
Adolescent girls in marginalized communities in the Philippines continue to face serious risks, including early pregnancy, child marriage, discrimination, and limited opportunities to participate in decisions that affect their lives. The Philippines Power-Up Girls Program was designed to respond to these challenges by helping girls build knowledge, confidence, and support systems within their families and communities. This 3-Year Learning Review examines how the program contributed to changes in the lives of girls, their families, and their communities across selected areas in Metro Manila and Sarangani Province. Findings show that girls gained better understanding of their rights, sexual and reproductive health, and personal safety, and many reported feeling more confident to speak up at home, in school, and in community activities. Parents also reported improved communication with their children and greater awareness of child protection. Local partners noted stronger collaboration and more opportunities for youth participation. However, challenges remain, including bullying, discrimination, and barriers that limit regular participation in program activities. Overall, the review shows that supporting girls while engaging families, communities, and local institutions can help create safer and more supportive environments for girls, though continued effort and stronger local ownership are needed to sustain these changes.
