Le Equilibriste: La Maternità in Italia (2026)

In Italia, paese che da quasi mezzo secolo affronta una crisi demografica strutturale, diventare genitori resta un percorso complesso, diseguale e spesso penalizzante, soprattutto per le donne.
Il rapporto si interroga sulle condizioni reali in cui prende forma la scelta di avere figli: oggi più che mai, le equilibriste non sono solo le madri che cercano di conciliare tutto, ma anche le donne che devono valutare se diventarlo. Il Dossier esplora il nodo centrale del rapporto tra maternità e lavoro, dove la child penalty continua a pesare su occupazione, reddito e carriere, con forti disuguaglianze territoriali e generazionali. Accanto a questi divari, emergono anche le situazioni più fragili, come quelle delle madri sole.
Uno sguardo è infine dedicato alle politiche e ai servizi, ancora disomogenei, e al Mothers’ Index, che, in collaborazione con l’Istituto Nazionale di Statistica (Istat), ci offre una classifica delle Regioni italiane che analizza dove per le mamme è più facile o difficile vivere.

In Italy, a country that has been facing a structural demographic crisis for nearly half a century, becoming a parent remains a complex, unequal, and often penalizing path—especially for women.
The report examines the real conditions under which the decision to have children takes shape: today more than ever, the “equilibrists” are not only mothers striving to balance everything, but also women who must consider whether to become mothers at all. The dossier explores the central issue of the relationship between motherhood and work, where the child penalty continues to weigh heavily on employment, income, and career prospects, with marked territorial and generational disparities. Alongside these inequalities, more vulnerable situations also emerge, such as those of single mothers.
Finally, the report looks at policies and services, which remain uneven across the country, as well as the Mothers’ Index—developed in collaboration with the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT)—which ranks Italian regions, highlighting where it is easier or more difficult for mothers to live.
