Save the Children Uganda
Save the Children has been working in Uganda since 1959 championing children’s rights and well-being. We work in partnership with the MOH to tackle inequalities in maternal and newborn health, participating in national technical working groups on RMNCAH, newborn and community health. We align our programming with the national RMNCAH plan and support interventions in line with MOH approved guidelines. We have been recognised by the MOH and the Committee of Experts on National Safe Motherhood as a key partner to improve maternal and newborn health and strengthen the policy environment for adolescent health.
This brief outlines Save the Children’s efforts to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes in Uganda through a systems-strengthening approach that integrates quality care, workforce capacity building, and community engagement. While Uganda has made progress in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality, significant gaps in quality of care, equity, and service coverage persist. The brief highlights evidence-based interventions, partnerships with government and communities, and innovative solutions—such as digital tools and low-cost medical technologies—implemented under programs like SWAP. These efforts demonstrate measurable improvements in care quality and survival outcomes, while emphasizing the need for sustained investment to accelerate progress toward national and global health targets.
