The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has significantly increased traumatic events and mental health issues, particularly among children and adolescents who are at high risk of developing disorders such as PTSD and Depression. To address this urgent need, the ‘TF-CBT Ukraine’ project was launched in March 2022 with the aim of implementing Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) to improve the psychological well-being of these vulnerable groups.
The project has successfully initiated nine training cohorts involving 133 Ukrainian therapists, with ongoing monthly case consultations and patient treatments. Scientific evaluations are being conducted at both patient and therapist levels using a mixed-methods design. The swift and effective implementation of trauma-focused evidence-based treatments is crucial, and insights gained from this project can inform future efforts to expand trauma care. Continued support and collaboration with international agencies are essential to help children build resilience in a war-torn nation.
