Maternal mortality is decreasing globally. However, progress is too slow. There are also critical inequalities across the world. The wast majority of maternal deaths are preventable if appropriate healthcare is provided. To achieve Sustainable Development Goals 3.1 and 3.1, every woman should be able to deliver in a health facility that provides safe emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC).
To maximize the proportion of the population accessing the closest EmONC health facility within two hours of travel time, this guide describes how countries can identify, upgrade and use their network of EmONC health facilities.
