Uganda is a party to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and has ratified the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. The Charter was signed by Uganda in February 1992 and ratified on 17 August 1994. Since the ratification of the Charter, the Government of Uganda has taken several steps to implement the provisions of the Charter, as outlined in this report. The report, organised into 9 distinctive areas, includes the following general sections: Section 1 provides a general background including an introduction, methodology of reporting and the country profile; Section 2 details general measures of implementation; Section 3 reviews the definition of the child and its related challenges; Section 4 covers the general principles; Section 5 the civil rights and freedoms; Section 6, family environment and alternative care; Section 7 health and welfare and Sections 8 and 9 education, leisure and cultural activities, and special protection measures respectively.
