Hurricanes Eta and Iota: Emergency Update

With more than 10 million people throughout the region affected by the storms, children and families in Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua are among the most affected. Widespread torrential rains and catastrophic raging winds triggered floods and landslides, causing major structural damage to roads, buildings, power grids, and other critical infrastructure in the hardest-hit areas, as well as destroying homes and crops. Ultimately, the storms have directly resulted in at least 125 deaths, displaced 90,000 people to temporary shelters, and left hundreds of thousands of families in need of urgent humanitarian assistance across the three countries. 

In the wake of both devastating storms, Save the Children is responding to the most urgent needs of children and families.

Con más de 10 millones de personas afectadas por las tormentas, los niños, niñas y las familias en Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua están entre los más afectados. Las lluvias torrenciales generalizadas y los vientos catastróficos desencadenaron inundaciones y deslizamientos de tierra, causando importantes daños estructurales en carreteras, edificios, redes eléctricas y otras infraestructuras críticas, así como la destrucción de hogares y cultivos. En definitiva, las tormentas han provocado directamente al menos 125 muertes, han desplazado a 90.000 personas a refugios temporales y han dejado a cientos de miles de familias necesitadas de ayuda humanitaria urgente en los tres países.   

Tras las dos devastadoras tormentas, Save the Children está respondiendo a las necesidades más urgentes de los niños, las niñas y las familias en las zonas más afectadas.
