It is a peer review process through which United Nations Member States can engage with others Member States and provide recommendations to improve the human rights situation in the country reviewed over a period of 4.5 years. It is a significant opportunity for civil society and children to advocate for implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and other international laws and standards. This potential has not always been met to push for progress for children and youth with diverse sexual orientation, gender identity, expression, and sexual characteristics (SOGIESC).
