In 1995 the South Africa’s Constitutional Court declared whipping unconstitutional, and since then corporal punishment has been prohibited throughout the penal, school and child care systems. Proposals to ban corporal punishment in the home are under discussion. This publication is aimed at supporting the case for abolishing the use of physical methods of chastising children – in all settings. It seeks to provide legal, moral and other arguments as part of a campaign to promote children’s human right to protection from all forms of violence as well as alternatives to physical punishment.
