This situational analysis provides estimates of the degree of inequality in both maternal and child mortality and other high-level maternal and child health outcomes causally related to maternal and child mortality, including child morbidity, children’s nutritional status and fertility. Estimates are also provided for several key intermediate health outcomes causally related to maternal and child mortality, including family planning, antenatal care, obstetric delivery care, immunization and curative care.

The report’s conceptual framework focuses on four areas: high-level health outcomes (i.e., maternal and child mortality, morbidity, nutrition and fertility), key intermediate outcomes causally related to these highlevel health outcomes (for example, family planning, antenatal care, obstetric delivery care, and immunization), related health services (including their physical proximity, quality and affordability), and underlying factors at both the community and individual/household levels (including both observed characteristics such as age, sex, education, ethnicity, income and location, and unobserved factors, such as historical experience, genetic factors and individual preferences) that affect the utilization of health services and high-level health outcomes directly.
