On 12 January 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti, killing more than 200,000 people and leaving 2 million in need of assistance. When the rainy season starts in mid-March, conditions are likely to deteriorate even further. The international community, in partnership with the Haitian government and Haitian civil society, must take immediate action to protect people from the threats posed by the coming rainy season. As well as responding to immediate needs, it’s also vital that the world addresses longer-term issues to lay the foundations for a better future for Haiti’s children. This brief looks at the following issues facing Haiti’s children and outlines what Save the Children is calling for:Water, sanitation and child wellbeing; Child protection; Education; Economy; Preparing for future disasters; and, Challenges ahead.
