Like all crises, the COVID-19 pandemic will have a distinct impact on women and girls that is both immediate and poses the risk of exacerbating pre-existing gender-based inequalities. Women and girls will be disproportionately affected and, unless their rights are protected, deprived of justice. All measures taken in response to the COVID-19 must uphold and protect human rights. States must also ensure that these responses include a gender approach, in order to ensure the rights of women and girls.

This document includes guidelines for African states to protect the rights of women and girls during the COVID-19 pandemic.
