The regions of Diffa and Zinder face extreme climatic hazards such as prolonged droughts, recurrent floods, violent winds, and accelerated desertification. These phenomena have severe consequences for communities and disproportionately affect children, who are among the most vulnerable groups. In 2024, Niger recorded its worst flooding in 20 years, with more than 1,500,000 people affected and about 2 500 schools destroyed. Many villages in Diffa were affected, with households taking shelter in schools, which disrupted children’s education. With funding from DANIDA, Save the Children implements the Kariya project which aims to strengthen the resilience of communities in the face of climate-related hazards in the southern regions of Zinder and Diffa.
