Endline Evaluation Report: Climate Education for Sustainable Development (ECOSMART) (Vietnam, 2025)

Vietnam’s high exposure to climate-related hazards underscores the urgent need to strengthen climate change adaptation education within schools, particularly to equip children with practical knowledge and skills for climate resilience. This endline evaluation assesses the outcomes and performance of the ECOSMART – Educating Children for a Sustainable and Resilient Tomorrow project, implemented by Save the Children in Vietnam with funding from TESA in lower secondary schools in Hai Phong and Thanh Hoa provinces. Using a mixed-methods, non-experimental design, the study compares baseline (2024) and endline (2025) data from student and teacher surveys, complemented by focus group discussions and key informant interviews. Findings demonstrate substantial improvements in students’ climate change knowledge, with comprehensive knowledge more than doubling, alongside increased interest and a marked shift from awareness to action, as evidenced by significant growth in sustained climate-friendly practices. Teachers also reported enhanced knowledge, confidence, and use of interdisciplinary approaches in climate education. The intervention proved highly relevant and effective, achieving full implementation across participating schools through integrated classroom instruction, extracurricular climate clubs, and child-led activities. The availability of digital learning materials and strong institutional acceptance further support sustainability and scalability. These results provide robust evidence that school-based, child-centred climate education models can deliver meaningful and durable gains in climate awareness and action, informing future replication in vulnerable contexts.
